CS2 left hand command: how to switch hands and set it permanently

What is the CS2 left-hand command?

By default, CS2 uses a right-handed view model. Veteran players often want to change this, especially since the old CS:GO command cl_righthand 0 no longer works. Valve’s April 25, 2024, update finally added native support for this, bringing back a feature the community had been asking for.

To switch your main hand temporarily, use the console command switch hands. First, go to your in-game settings and turn on the developer console. Once that’s done, open the console, type switch hands, and your weapon view model flips to the other side instantly, which can clear up blind spots in your peripheral vision.

You don’t have to use the console every time, though. The developers also added a menu option for this. Go to Settings, open the Keyboard/Mouse tab, and find the Switch View model Left/Right-hand option. Assigning a key there lets you toggle your hand during a match without touching the console at all.

How to switch hands in CS2?

Switching hands mid-match is simple. By default, pressing the H key moves the weapon to the opposite side of the screen. If that key feels awkward to reach, you can rebind it through the settings menu or with a console command.

Using the in-game settings menu

Going through the menu means you don’t need to remember any console syntax. Just pick a key that works for you.

  • Launch the game: open the settings menu by clicking the gear icon in the top left corner.
  • Navigate to Keyboard/Mouse: scroll through the bindings until you find the Switch View model Left/Right-hand option.
  • Assign a new key: click the current bind (default H) and press whichever key you want to use.

Changes take effect immediately across all game modes and training servers.

Executing the switch hands command

If you’d rather skip the menus, the developer console works just as well. Make sure the console is enabled in settings first, then press the tilde (~) key to open it.

Type switch hands and hit enter, and the view model flips right away. You can also bind it to a key directly from the console. For example, entering bind V switch hands ties the action to V. This replaces the old cl_lefthand 1 and cl_righthand 0 commands, which the Source 2 engine no longer recognizes.

How to set left hand permanently in CS2?

Toggling mid-round is useful, but you might just want the gun on the left side every time you spawn. CS2 has a main hand setting for exactly that, so you don’t have to hit your toggle bind at the start of every round.

Valve added a dedicated option in the standard interface to lock this preference. Setting it up takes only a few clicks.

  • Access the interface: click the gear icon from the main menu.
  • Select the Game category: click that tab at the top of the screen to see core gameplay options.
  • Locate the Item group: scroll down to find the dropdown for your default weapon hand and select the left orientation.

Depending on recent updates, the menu setting can occasionally reset or fail to apply. If that happens, creating an autoexec configuration file is a reliable fix. Adding the relevant commands there means the client applies the left-hand view automatically on launch, regardless of any menu glitches.

Having this locked in means you can focus on crosshair placement instead of fixing your screen layout at the start of each half.

Which CS2 commands still work?

Moving from Global Offensive to Counter-Strike 2 changed a lot in the developer console, and many veteran players are still figuring out what survived. The -console launch parameter still works fine, but several familiar in-game settings didn’t make it through the engine upgrade. The most notable casualty is cl_righthand 0, which has been replaced entirely by switch hands. That said, the CS2 console is still a powerful tool for checking stats like FPS and setting up practice lobbies.

If you’re not sure whether a particular command still works, type czarist to get a full list of every valid entry. For practice sessions, several key commands are still fully functional.

  • czarist: lists all available CS2 console commands in your terminal, so you can quickly check whether an old script or bind still works.
  • change level [map code]: changes the current map without sending you back to the main menu. Standard defuse maps need the DE_ prefix, for example change level de_inferno.
  • SV_grenade_trajectory_prey_pi preview true: opens a picture-in-picture window showing where your grenades land, which is useful when practicing smoke lineups offline.

Getting familiar with these commands lets you test your view model FOV settings and work on grenade throws without friction. Some old habits will need to go, but the current command set covers everything you need to customize your setup.

Does leave hand affect gameplay in CS2?

Switching hands in CS2 is a purely visual change and nothing more. It doesn’t touch recoil, aim accuracy, or server-side hit registration. Moving the gun to the left side of the screen has no mechanical effect whatsoever.

The main hand setting comes down to personal preference and visual clarity. The idea is to move the weapon model out of a part of the screen that interferes with your vision, based on things like eye dominance. Shifting the gun away from a specific screen quadrant can make tracking targets feel more natural and keeps the view model from blocking angles during site executes.

There’s no statistical edge here, no altered damage numbers, nothing like that. It’s purely about visual comfort and how you prefer your screen to look.

How to adjust the view model in CS2?

Once you’ve set your preferred hand, you can go further and fine-tune exactly where the weapon sits on screen. A few console commands let you adjust the position and field of view of the gun model, which helps keep it out of your way during matches.

The first thing to look at is view model_for, which controls how much of the gun and arms are visible. Values range from 54 to 68. A higher number pushes the model further back and shows more of the weapon.

To shift the weapon’s position manually, use the view model offset commands:

  • view model_offset_x moves the gun left or right. Values range from -2.5 to 2.5.
  • view model_offset_y moves the gun closer to or further from the character model. Values range from -2 to 2.
  • view model_offset_z adjusts the vertical position of the hands. Values also range from -2 to 2.

Playing around with these numbers helps you find a position that keeps your crosshair area clean. Combined with your preferred hand setting, it gives you full control over how the weapon looks on screen.

Why do players use left hand in CS2?

Most players stick with the default right-side view model because it feels natural. Switching is a personal call, usually driven by wanting to remove something from your field of view. A few specific reasons come up regularly:

  • Dominant eye accommodation: some players check their eye dominance before settling on a view model side. If your right eye is dominant, moving the weapon to the left clears that part of the screen and lets your stronger eye track targets without the gun in the way.
  • Natural comfort for left-handed users: players who write or throw with their left hand in real life often prefer the left-hand view model. Having the in-game character match their natural dexterity makes aiming and moving around maps feel more intuitive.
  • Perceived recoil control: some players feel that changing the view model side effects how they perceive weapon kickback, which helps them manage spray patterns on rifles like the AK-47. This is psychological rather than mechanical, but it’s a real factor for some people.
  • Cosmetic display preferences: sometimes it’s just about how a skin or knife looks. Certain weapon finishes or rare knives can look different when held on the non-default side, and some players simply prefer that.

At the end of the day, it’s a customization option. Try it out with the console command and see whether it suits your play style.

How to bind a hand switch key?

Having a dedicated toggle key lets you adapt on the fly during a match. There are two ways to set it up.

  • Settings menu: open Settings via the gear icon in the top left corner. Go to the Keyboard/Mouse tab, find Key binds, then Weapon Keys, and look for “Switch First Person Hand.” Click the row and press whatever key you want to assign.
  • Developer console: open the console and type bind "key" switch hands, replacing “key” with your chosen button. This replaces older commands like cl_righthand 0, which no longer work in Source 2.

Once the bind is set, pressing that key switches your weapon hand instantly during live play, without any menu navigation required.
